In Brazil the common name is Dama da Noite meaning lady of the night. In English it is also goes by the name Queen of the Night, an even more powerful denomination. Its scientific name is Epiphyllum oxypetalum. Consuming it is said to provide an increase in blood circulation in the brain and consequently it increases the functioning of neurotransmitters. Popular folk medicine uses it to treat headaches.
Lady of the Night
The interesting thing is that it grows more in a a rainforest setting than the normal dry setting of most cacti. The cactus rarely blooms and when it does its immensely fragrant white flowers open only at night. Apart from opening only at night they usually last only that one night. Like a one day butterfly. showing all their beauty and fragrance just for an instant. When insects pollinate the flowers they produce purple red fruits that add to its mysterious appearance.
Katukina Rapé
The Katukina are among the few tribes that first brought the medicines of the forest to the urban centres. Now many other tribes followed this cultural revival but in the beginning of the third millennium it were first the Katukina, Huni Kuin and Yawanawa that started this movement. The Katukina were the ones to pioneer the expansion of Kambo and with that soon Rapé spread around. They are still considered by many the masters of the sacred frog medicine. The Rapé Snuff in the beginning was quite crude but very original by know they have refined their production a lot and produce excellent quality.
